Tinnitus is a very complex and still little understood condition, and in fact the very term “tinnitus” is a catch all which has been used to cover a very wide variety of symptoms. However, it is uncontroversial to regard each and every one of these distressing symptoms as evidence as a failure of one or more of the body’s senses or systems, and it therefore seems sensible to believe that the maximisation of the body’s overall health is likely to assist in the alleviation of the symptoms. The human organism is a wonderful self-healer, when given every chance and to this end it is vital to pay attention to optimal nutrition. In terms of tinnitus most attention has been paid to the B complex vitamins because of their particular association with the health of the nervous system. Although these vitamins are relatively easy to obtain from a diet rich in wholefoods, they are poorly supplied by a diet dependent on refined and processed foods, and easily used up or excreted by the body when under stress. Some degree of supplementation of these vitamins is therefore recommended when asking the body to heal itself.
