Vitamins for Anxiety and Stress – What Nutrients and Herbs are Best?

If you’re experiencing emotional issues like stress, depression, anxiety, panic attacks or unexplained mood swings, there are effective natural ways to address these problems. Vitamins for anxiety and stress offer a way to get important supplementary nutrients and herbs which may help to ease the symptoms you’re experiencing.

If you’re experiencing high levels of stress or anxiety it may be a good idea to have a look at your diet. A balanced diet is always the first course of action to take when dealing with an imbalance, whether it’s in your mind or your body.

In the past several decades, dietary fat has been made out to be the villain concerning all manner of conditions from illness and disease to obesity. It’s now known that the brain is composed largely of fat and needs specific kinds of healthy fat to maintain itself.

Including foods like eggs, red meat, fish, nuts and seeds in your diet will help ensure that you’re getting the proper nutrients for your brain to function efficiently. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan this may be more difficult and using nutritional supplements is one option that you may find useful.

It has been shown in numerous research studies that the nutrient SAM-e is a very important substance which may be involved in numerous processes within the body. SAM-e works as a natural stress reliever and antidepressant by increasing dopamine and serotonin activity, which are two very important compounds that affect our moods.

Another important stress relieving nutrient is DMAE. It has been shown through research that DMAE has the ability to elevate one’s mood, relieve stress and enhance cognitive functions. It also plays a major role in the manufacturing of important neurotransmitters.

Ginkgo biloba is an herb which has been used traditionally to enhance brain function. Today there are many double-blind research studies showing that it does indeed have the ability to increase oxygen to the brain and other parts of the body. Ginkgo is often used to increase mental clarity, memory as well as to ease the effects of stress, anxiety or depression.

One precaution to keep in mind with ginkgo is that it is a natural blood thinning agent. If you’re already on prescription blood thinners, it’s a good idea to consult your physician before taking ginkgo.

The herbs passionflower and valerian have an excellent track record for providing effective support of the brain and nervous system. This has also been confirmed by clinical research and has made these herbs a popular addition in many herbal formulas to help soothe depression, anxiety, panic, and stress.

Tips on Choosing a Nutritional Supplement

1. Make sure any supplements you choose are produced in pharmaceutical GMP compliant facilities. This ensures that they are produced using the most rigorous manufacturing standards. Government and private companies have demonstrated that many supplements on the market today may harbor contaminants or do not contain any amount of ingredients takes it on the label.

Nutritional supplements manufactured in the U.S. are regulated based on agreed-upon standards within the industry. Compliance to these standards is voluntary, which accounts for the great variability in quality in dietary supplement products.

2. Some nutrients like SAM-e are very fragile and require extra care during the manufacturing process. Higher quality supplements may employ an enteric coating which helps protect fragile nutrients from being destroyed by stomach acids.

Stress, anxiety and depression often upset the digestive system causing a build-up of excess acid that destroys nutrients from food and many dietary supplements before they can reach the small intestine where they will be converted to energy.

A nutritional supplement with an enteric coating can pass through stomach acid unharmed and be released in the small intestine where the nutrients can do the most good.
